Chaguanas resident Charmaine Sahadeo received a much-needed fan and refrigerator on Thursday from the Freemasons.
The 42-year-old mother of two suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumours to form all over the body. Dozens of nodules have made her almost unrecognisable.
Lumps of varying sizes cover almost every inch of Sahadeo’s body and head.
Sahadeo shies away from leaving her house because of her condition. She is unable to work and depends on a $2,000 disability grant from the Ministry of Social Development.
However, Sahadeo said this does not meet all the needs of her and her family.
Sahadeo’s plight was featured on Guardian Media on July 31, 2022. It caught the attention of David Lumsden, Excellent Companion of the District Grand Royal Arch Chapter of T&T Freemasons, who rallied the organisation to assist the mother of two.
Lumsden said after seeing Sahadeo’s plight highlighted in the media, the charity committee of his organisation decided to assist Sahadeo urgently.
“Promises were made to her that haven’t materialised and we thought that we would come forward very quickly and try to get her going with whatever she needs. Our objective is to leave her in a better condition than we found her.”
The Freemason delivered a refrigerator and fan to Sahadeo at her Edinburgh 500 home.
Sahadeo said she was very happy with the gifts and said they would ease some of the burdens she has been faced with.
