Francois Baptiste, 46, of Ramlal Street, Chickland Road, Freeport, was killed when his vehicle collided with a concrete barrier along Mission Road, Freeport, around 1 pm yesterday.
Guardian Media visited the family’s home, where his mother, 78-year-old Jassodra Girley Tookhai, said she had seen her son earlier that morning and he appeared to be in good spirits.
Tookhai said Baptiste had changed the battery in his blue Nissan Wingroad on Wednesday and later left home to go out.
She said she was shocked to learn of his death.
Tookhai said Baptiste had fallen ill in 2012, suffering from diabetes and other ailments, and had been on disability since then. She added that prior to his illness, he was an active and well-known community advocate.
Councillor for the area Anil Balliram described Baptiste as a helpful individual with a strong sense of community involvement.
