A driver who stopped to assist victims of a fatal accident on the Beetham Highway on Tuesday night was beaten and robbed by a group of men.
Police said the man pulled to the side of the eastbound lane at 10 pm after noticing the crash and began helping to pull one of the drivers from the wreckage. He reported that someone grabbed him from behind, and several men began beating him before stealing $10,000, his identification card and bank card. The assailants then ran away.
Shortly after, onlookers gathered as residents pulled 19-year-old Kavish Persad of Aranguez from his submerged white Hyundai Ionic, which had landed in the Laventille River after colliding with another vehicle. Persad was unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.
