Election workers at a mock polling station along Upper Mt Hope Road, Mt Hope, were frightened yesterday, after gunshots were fired less than 150 feet from where they were stationed.
Indicating that the incident occurred around 1.15 pm near Sunset Drive and Mt Hope Road, one woman said, “It left us a bit shaky and uneasy. It is not something we are accustomed to at this time.”
A second woman said it had left them a bit fearful, while another chimed in, “I find they too idle ... hot, hot sun, so?”
The group referred to the intimidatory act as “mischievous” but said it had not deterred them from their work.
They dismissed claims that someone had set off fireworks, a fact that was later confirmed by investigators from the San Juan CSI, who visited the scene and retrieved two spent 9 mm shells.
A description of a male suspect who was clad in blue three-quarter pants and a white T-shirt, with a black jersey covering his face and head, was given to the police.
At Gordon Street, Mt Hope, workers at two different mock polling stations said they had not heard the gunshots.
However, one woman said she received a phone call informing her of what had happened and said she was reportedly told the workers had to “mind our business.”
Meanwhile, police officials were, up to last evening, investigating reports of a second shooting in the Mt Lambert/Mt D’or area, which they said could have been another act intended to frighten persons from going out to cast their vote.
