Investigators from the Housing Development Corporation returned to Wellington Gardens, Debe on Friday following complaints from residents that they are falling ill because of an influx of mold inside and outside their homes.
For nine years the residents say they have been complaining to the HDC but their cries are falling on deaf ears.
Now that many of them are suffering from respiratory problems, lung infections, cancer, and other related diseases, they are threatening to take legal action jointly if they are not relocated.
Speaking to Guardian Media on Wednesday, resident Joanna Chance said they were frustrated because the mould keeps growing even though some of them have changed ceilings, walls, tiles, and even roofs. She said the materials used in the prefabricated homes were a breeding ground for black mould and this was detrimental to their health.
Despite the awful living conditions, Chance said she has been paying her mortgage diligently with the hope that she will be relocated soon.
Meanwhile, Simone Claxton who suffers from hypothyroidism, diabetes, anxiety, and depression, said she and her 12-year-old daughter had to move out of the mouldy house.
"I was getting sick at home, with diabetes and high blood pressure and different medical problems, since 2014. The walls are black and the moister comes through. There is mould in the ceiling and floor. The material it was made with is encouraging the moulds," she said.
Chance added: "In July I did a scan and it picked up toxins and they found that I have mould in my lungs so we knew we could not stay here anymore," she added.
Claxton said it made no sense to clean as the mold comes back after a day or two.
"We want the HDC to relocate us because these houses are no longer habitable,' she said.
Another resident who requested anonymity said she too was getting sick from the moulds.
"I mopped down the house with bleach and the mold comes back. There are problems in the bathroom. I tiled over my entire house. They raising up. The house is making everyone sick. My neighbour is experiencing the same health issues. It is frightening to know that this house is infested with mould.
The resident said she wrote HDC several times in the past but did not get any assistance.
A team from HDC visited the residents' homes on Thursday and took statements. However, some of the residents were not happy with the responses they got.
"Is nine years we waiting," Claxton shouted as the team walked off.
On Friday morning, another crew from HDC went to the residents' homes to make an assessment. An official from the HDC communications department said they will issue a statement shortly after investigations.
