By the end of 2025, there should be a new housing development which will provide 100 townhouses for Housing Development Corporation (HDC) clients in Caura, Tunapuna.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development Camille Robinson-Regis made the comment during the sod-turning ceremony for the Caura Housing Development project at Caura Royal Road, which will cost $117 million.
“This is the single largest investment in Caura in recent years,” Robinson-Regis said.
The minister explained that once on schedule, the 100 townhouses will be constructed on 4.6 hectres of land over two phases, 72 in June 2025 and the other 28 in December of that year.
She added that the project will also provide employment for the constituents.
“It is anticipated that approximately 500 individuals will be employed throughout the duration of the project and most of these individuals come from the Tunapuna area,” she said.
The development will join five other HDC complexes in the area, she noted. These include Basilon Court, Goya Lands, El Dorado Heights, Madhoo Heights and Peastree.
She explained that the HDC recognised that there are different models of home ownership which they must explore. However, she said the Caura development will be a mortgage arrangement.
“We are returning the HDC and its subsidiaries to its moorings of ensuring that we build housing in such a way that those who are on the HDC’s list of applicants can in fact afford the houses,” she explained.
MP Tunapuna Esmond Forde, meanwhile, said his constituents were happy the HDC had once again embarked on a project in the community, adding he remained willing and able to support and assist in any way possible to ensure the success of the venture.
