Support has poured in from members of the public for 24-year-old visually impaired Brandon Ramkissoon, who was robbed while on his way home after the blackout which affected some parts of Trinidad on Tuesday.
Ramkissoon was at the home of a relative close to his Mc Clean Trace, Las Lomas home when the power outage hit. The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission confirmed that 35 per cent of the country was left in darkness after a landslide impacted the Union Gandhi power line in Rousillac.
Ramkissoon’s relative had encouraged him to stay until power was restored due to safety reasons.
Speaking to Guardian Media on Thursday, Ramkissoon said, “They say stay until the current come back because supposed you walking in the dark and you get robbed.”
Moments after leaving his relative’s home after the electricity returned, Ramkissoon was robbed by a group of men impersonating police officers. He was relieved of his blue tooth music box, a bowl of food and a cellular phone.
Ramkissoon said his mobile phone was his lifeline, as it was equipped to give visually impaired persons accessibility and allowed him to contact his loved ones in case of emergencies.
Speaking to Guardian Media yesterday, Ramkissoon said many had contacted his relative and pledged financial assistance, with one company even providing a new mobile device.
He said, “Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who assisted me, it really means a lot.” Ramkissoon also encouraged others to be safe and vigilant.
