They live in Mafeking, Mayaro, a place where many oil and gas companies operate.
Now relatives of cancer-stricken Mayaro youth Sanjay Sampat are making a stirring appeal to energy companies to help save his life.
Thanks to the support of good Samaritans, Sanjay has flown to the Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, India where he is undergoing treatment.
In an interview on Thursday, his brother Donald Sampat said Sanjay's cancer has become even more aggressive.
"Sanjay had one dose of chemo and they will give him another in a few days. They ran the chemo through his system for 22 hours and he is recovering. With chemo, all your blood cells and blood count go very low. Within three weeks, he will get another dose of chemo," he explained.
Donald added: " They are wiping the bone marrow so he will have to stay in the BMT room for 3 weeks for this treatment which is a very critical part of the treatment."
Once Sanjay stabilizes, Donald said he will undergo a bone marrow transplant.
"On Friday we will get the results to see who is a better match for the bone marrow transplant, me or my other brother and then one of us wiull have to fly to India," Donald said.
During the treatment, Donald said Sanjay developed a slight infection on his chest which was treated with antibiotics.
Sanjay's parents Chatram and Shanty are with him now and all they can afford right now is one month of accommodation. Donald said several fundraisers are being held to raise funds.
"I am pleading with everyone to please assist us. We are in dire need to pay for this treatment. We did fundraisers before. We have a curry-que on June 25 at Mafeking. The United Farmers are having a concert on the 25th June from 6 pm, at the Regent Star hotel for the price of $200 which includes dinner," Donald said.
He added that on July 9, there will be a barbeque at Stork compound in Point Lisas for $40 per box.
"The car washing is continuing every weekend in aid of Sanjay," he added.
Donald said they were thankful to everyone who donated already.
"It's tough but we think where there is a will there is a way. We are not close to getting the figure but we will not give up on Sanjay," he added.
Sanjay was diagnosed with leukaemia in December 2021. After undergoing treatment, his face became paralysed and he lost his ability to smile.
