Heritage Petroleum has clamped a hydrocarbon leak near the Moruga Secondary School that triggered air quality testing and emergency response measures late last month.

The company said the leak, detected on May 23, prompted immediate action by its emergency team to contain and clean the area. It has since restored the site.

During the cleanup, school officials reported a strong odour. In response, Heritage met with them and sent emergency medical responders to the school. The company also commissioned independent air quality tests, which confirmed that air quality remained within acceptable limits.

“As an added precaution, Port-a-cool fans were installed to improve air circulation in designated areas of the school,” Heritage said in a media release issued today.

On June 3, representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) inspected the site and confirmed that Heritage had followed the necessary protocols to address the leak.

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries and the Environmental Management Authority were also informed.

Heritage said it remains in contact with key stakeholders as the situation stabilises
