Drivers heading into Port-of-Spain on Monday for the Independence Day celebrations and CPL cricket should plan ahead, with temporary parking and traffic restrictions set to affect several major roads.
The restrictions, issued by the Commissioner of Police, will take effect from 6 a.m. on Monday, August 31, and continue until 1 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1.
Several roads will have parking restrictions during the morning, while others will have restrictions on both parking and vehicular traffic.
Where parking is prohibited
From 6 a.m. to noon, parking will be prohibited on:
* Queen's Park West, between Queen's Park East and Cipriani Boulevard
* Chancery Lane, between Gordon Street and Queen's Park West
* Keate Street
* Frederick Street, between Queen's Park West and Park Street
* Park Street, between Frederick Street and St Vincent Street
* New Street
* Dere Street
* Albion Street
* Dundonald Street
* Circular Road
* Rapsey Street
* Gordon Street
* Western Main Road, between Tragarete Road and Long Circular Road
* Tragarete Road
Parking will also be prohibited on Long Circular Road, between Western Main Road and Patna Street, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
From noon on Monday until 1 a.m. Tuesday, parking will be prohibited on:
* Queen's Park West, between Chancery Lane and St Clair Avenue
* Maraval Road, between St Clair Avenue and Saddle Road
* Circular Road, between Saddle Road and St Ann's Road
* The eastern end of Circular Road, between the St Ann's Road roundabout and Queen's Park East
* Queen's Park East
* Charlotte Street, between Queen's Park West and New Street
Roads closed to traffic
From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., drivers will not be allowed to park or proceed on Queen's Park West, between Queen's Park East and Chancery Lane; Keate Street; Frederick Street, between Queen's Park West and Park Street; Albion Street, between Chancery Lane and Victoria Avenue; New Street; Pembroke Street, between Keate Street and Gordon Street; and Chancery Lane, between Gordon Street and Queen's Park West.
Park Street, between Henry Street and Edward Street, will be closed to parking and traffic from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
From 7 a.m. to noon, the restrictions will also apply to Tragarete Road and Western Main Road, between Damian Street and Lucknow Street.
CPL adds more restrictions
Additional restrictions will be in place around the Queen's Park Oval for the Caribbean Premier League T20.
On Monday, from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., parking will be prohibited on Tragarete Road, between Broome Street and Gray Street; St Clair Avenue, between Broome Street and Gray Street; and Sweet Briar Road, between Alexandra Street and Gray Street.
Drivers will also be prohibited from parking or driving on Elizabeth Street, between St Clair Avenue and Tragarete Road; Sweet Briar Road, between Elizabeth Street and Alexandra Street; and Havelock Street, between Tragarete Road and St Clair Avenue.
These CPL restrictions also apply during specified periods on other match days, including Friday, August 28; Saturday, August 29; and Wednesday, September 2.
Evening traffic changes
From 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, traffic on Lady Young Road, between the Hilton Hotel entrance and the Lady Young Road lookout, will travel eastbound only.
Colville Street will operate southbound only during the same period.
Rapsey Street, between Saddle Road and Wainwright Street, will allow traffic in both directions from 6 a.m. to noon.
Don't park and risk a tow
Police have warned that vehicles parked in breach of the restrictions can be removed and impounded.
With Independence celebrations and CPL taking place on the same day, drivers heading into Port-of-Spain are being advised to pay close attention to the temporary restrictions and plan their routes accordingly.
