Works Minister Rohan Sinanan is appealing to the public to exercise caution and patience as contractors work around the clock to make Indian Walk Road in Moruga accessible.
Thousands of people continue to be cut off after a leaking water main caused the road to cave in on Tuesday night. Sinanan said WASA has been working to clamp off two mains—a 12 inch and a 16-inch main. Once WASA completes the project, the contractor General Earth Movers will be able to begin road repairs, Sinanan added. He said motorists cannot pass along the Moruga Main Road and advised that alternative routes be utilised.
Meanwhile, residents remain hopeful that the road will be fixed soon. Some residents said they have not been able to go to work while children have not been able to attend school.
Others said their water supply has also been disrupted. Meanwhile, WASA in a statement said the water shortage was due to the connection of the water mains at Indian Walk. The authority said water would be restored once the lines are repaired. The water main had been leaking for several years.
Resident Dianne Mark said a house next door owned by Jean and Kelvin Mollino was destroyed after the land slipped. Last December Carol Young and family also vacated her home because of the slippage.
