Businessman Ishwar Galbaransingh has died. Confirmation of his death came from his wife Cheryl Monday afternoon.
"I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of my beloved husband, Ish Galbaransingh who passed away peacefully today after a four-year fight with cancer. You all know him as a fighter but the battle ended today," she stated in a message to friends and family.
Galbaransingh was charged in 2005 in relation to a corruption matter pertaining to the construction of the Piarco International Airport.
Former prime minister Basdeo Panday and his wife were accused of receiving £25,000 from Carlos John and Galbaransingh in 1998 as an inducement or reward in relation to the Piarco Airport project.
In March last year, Galbaransingh told Guardian Media that the Piarco corruption cases destroyed his family's lives.
He said he expected Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard, SC, to discontinue the three remaining corruption cases related to the Piarco International Airport.
Galbaransingh made the prediction in a telephone interview, hours after Gaspard discontinued the charges against him, former prime minister Basdeo Panday, his wife Oma, and former government minister Carlos John in the Piarco 3 case.
