Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has condemned the attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, expressing relief that President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and others in attendance were not harmed.
In a social media post yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said she was relieved that all officials and guests were safe following the incident. She also commended the United States Secret Service members for their response.
“The swift action of the United States Secret Service in apprehending the shooter is commendable, and I extend my best wishes to the injured officer. I strongly condemn all acts of violence against democratic institutions, and my thoughts are with those affected and traumatised by this incident,” Persad-Bissessar said.
According to reports, a man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby outside the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Trump was hosting on Saturday night, charging toward the ballroom in a chaotic encounter with Secret Service agents as guests dived under tables at the sound of shots being fired. Trump was uninjured and was rushed off the stage.
The was later identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Officials said he was a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held. He is expected in court today.
Recognising that this was another attack on President Trump, Persad-Bissessar added, “I note with concern that this is yet another attempt targeting President Trump, and I pray for his continued safety and for the people of the United States.
