With the national spotlight on today’s Budget presentation by Finance Minister Dave Tancoo, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is acknowledging that they “cannot give everybody everything.”
Speaking at her Divali celebrations at her constituency office in Penal on Saturday night, however, Persad-Bissessar promised that they would certainly try.
Briefly touching on the Budget, she said, jokingly, “We go to Parliament on Monday and is blows and Barry will say, ‘sit down’,” as she made reference to last week’s heated exchange between Laventille West MP Kareem Marcelle and Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath in Parliament.
As she thanked her team in the Parliament and the Senate, she asked her guests to also thank them, adding, “After Monday, I hope you will still be thanking all of us.”
Reiterating the words of the pundit during the Lakshmi puja held earlier, she said, “In life, you cannot please everybody. There will always be some who will not be happy, some will be angry and some will be sad and all the words in between. I said, ‘we cannot give everybody everything, but we can try.’”
The pundit, she added, then said,”’You know why when the UNC wins, everybody wins.’”
Turning to members of her Cabinet who were on stage with her, she said, “Team, we can try, we will try.”
However, Finance Minister Tancoo, who will deliver his maiden Budget presentation at 1:30 pm today, has indicated that it will take “a lot of very hard work and some sacrifice” to rebuild the country.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with his Government colleagues, he said they are committed, patriotic, people-centred and future-focused as they begin the process.
