Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday called on the acting Commissioner of Police and Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi for allegedly breaching the law with the sale of a car to former Police Service Commission member Roger Kawalsingh.
Persad-Bissessar wrote the acting CoP and DPP yesterday on the matter citing the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Chap 48:50. In her six-page letter, she cited 24 points, basing arguments on several segments of Section 19 of the MVRT Act.
In a statement, Persad-Bissessar said the recently reported revelations surrounding the Attorney General regarding the sale of his car to Kawalsingh were “extremely serious.”
She was referring to reported information coming out of a Freedom of Information request filed by SC Anand Ramlogan.
The Opposition Leader added, “If the allegations surrounding this matter are true it would mean the Attorney General, the legal advisor to the Government is guilty of misconduct.
“In light of this, I have written to the acting Commissioner of Police, as well as the Director of Public Prosecutions, requesting that the TT Police Service investigate the failure by Mr Faris Al-Rawi to transfer Motor Vehicle Registration No PCY 84 to Mr Roger Kawalsingh, and the failure to notify the Transport Commissioner of the change in ownership contrary to Section 19 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Chap 48:50.”
She added, “Our fellow citizens who commit this offence are made to face the full brunt of the law. However, Attorney General Al-Rawi appears to believe he is above the laws of our land. Attorney General Al-Rawi has made a habit of flouting laws that he himself writes for everyone else to follow. As the highest legal advisor to the Government, he continues to bring his office into disrepute.”
The Opposition Leader called on the TTPS to investigate the matter to the fullest extent.
She said Al-Rawi must realise his position is now untenable and he should resign immediately.
