A man pur­port­ing to be a kid­nap vic­tim and his sus­pect­ed cap­tor re­mained in po­lice cus­tody up to yes­ter­day af­ter­noon, as they were ques­tioned by po­lice in the mur­der of a St Joseph mur­der last week.

Po­lice said one of the men claimed that he was kid­napped from La Hor­quet­ta af­ter a card game on Sat­ur­day night.

He claimed he was tak­en to a forest­ed area on Bertie Road, Five Rivers, Arou­ca, but was able to es­cape with a Smith and Wes­son pis­tol be­long­ing to his cap­tor when the sus­pect fell asleep.

The vic­tim ar­rived at the Arou­ca Po­lice Sta­tion and re­port­ed what hap­pened.

Of­fi­cers of the North-Cen­tral Di­vi­sion Task Force fol­lowed the man’s di­rec­tions and ar­rest­ed the kid­nap­per.

Po­lice con­firmed both the vic­tim and the sus­pect­ed kid­nap­per were tak­en in­to cus­tody and were ques­tioned in the mur­der of 44-year-old Tri­cia Ma­haraj.

Ma­haraj, a busi­ness­woman, re­port­ed­ly re­ceived a call from a stranger she ex­pect­ed to buy a ve­hi­cle from and went out­side her Mungia Trace, River­side Road home to meet him.

It was re­port­ed that Ma­haraj ap­proached the stranger, who was in a gold Ti­i­da Sedan, as a gun­man got out of the back­seat of the car and shot her sev­er­al times, be­fore get­ting back in the ve­hi­cle, which sped off.

Of­fi­cers of the Re­gion II Homi­cide Bu­reau are con­tin­u­ing en­quiries in­to Ma­haraj’s mur­der.
