A domestic dispute in Couva turned deadly on Tuesday night, leaving a 48-year-old woman dead and a male relative in police custody.
Kamnee Thackurdeen of Fire Station Road died at the San Fernando General Hospital on Wednesday evening, after being treated in the Intensive Care Unit for a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police said initially the 45-year-old suspect claimed an intruder had entered their home and shot Thackurdeen during a robbery. But under further questioning, he reportedly admitted that he and Thackurdeen had argued, and during a struggle, a revolver discharged.
Investigators said around 9.10 pm on Tuesday, officers from Couva CID, PC Bacchus, WPC Horsford and PC Morrison, responded to a wounding report. The man told them a gunman had entered through a door, and fired a shot that struck Thackurdeen. He claimed the attacker then fled.
The suspect led officers to a bedroom, where they found Thackurdeen lying unresponsive on her back with a chest wound. A silver and black revolver was discovered beneath her body.
She was taken to the Couva District Health Facility for emergency care before being transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she later died.
Crime Scene Investigators recovered the firearm, which contained one spent casing and one live round of .38 calibre ammunition. Officers also swabbed the suspect’s hands for gunshot residue and placed him under arrest.
He was given medical attention before being taken to the Couva Police Station. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
