A do­mes­tic dis­pute in Cou­va turned dead­ly on Tues­day night, leav­ing a 48-year-old woman dead and a male rel­a­tive in po­lice cus­tody.

Kam­nee Thack­ur­deen of Fire Sta­tion Road died at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal on Wednes­day evening, af­ter be­ing treat­ed in the In­ten­sive Care Unit for a gun­shot wound to the chest.

Po­lice said ini­tial­ly the 45-year-old sus­pect claimed an in­trud­er had en­tered their home and shot Thack­ur­deen dur­ing a rob­bery. But un­der fur­ther ques­tion­ing, he re­port­ed­ly ad­mit­ted that he and Thack­ur­deen had ar­gued, and dur­ing a strug­gle, a re­volver dis­charged.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said around 9.10 pm on Tues­day, of­fi­cers from Cou­va CID, PC Bac­chus, WPC Hors­ford and PC Mor­ri­son, re­spond­ed to a wound­ing re­port. The man told them a gun­man had en­tered through a door, and fired a shot that struck Thack­ur­deen. He claimed the at­tack­er then fled.

The sus­pect led of­fi­cers to a bed­room, where they found Thack­ur­deen ly­ing un­re­spon­sive on her back with a chest wound. A sil­ver and black re­volver was dis­cov­ered be­neath her body.

She was tak­en to the Cou­va Dis­trict Health Fa­cil­i­ty for emer­gency care be­fore be­ing trans­ferred to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where she lat­er died.

Crime Scene In­ves­ti­ga­tors re­cov­ered the firearm, which con­tained one spent cas­ing and one live round of .38 cal­i­bre am­mu­ni­tion. Of­fi­cers al­so swabbed the sus­pect’s hands for gun­shot residue and placed him un­der ar­rest.

He was giv­en med­ical at­ten­tion be­fore be­ing tak­en to the Cou­va Po­lice Sta­tion. He re­mains in cus­tody as in­ves­ti­ga­tions con­tin­ue.
