A day after he was attacked with a piece of wood at a bar in La Brea, Dillon Joefield underwent emergency surgery at the San Fernando General Hospital.
The 29-year-old gardener was attacked while liming with friends on Saturday night.
The assailant is said to be known to him.
Speaking to Guardian Media on the condition of anonymity yesterday, a relative said she received the call around 10 pm on Saturday that he had been attacked.
Joefield was first taken to the Point Fortin Hospital for emergency treatment before being transferred to San Fernando, where he remains in critical condition.
The relative said it was not the first violent incident Joefield had experienced.
“Another time he was outside and someone chopped him in the face, but he blocked the lash and got chopped in his hand. I did not want him to lime with those friends. I tired talk, I don’t know what to do again,” the relative said.
She said Joefield wanted to start gardening.
“I have a piece of land with small lime trees and he wanted to plant vegetables and sell,” his relative said. “He said that is what making money right now. He was going to do a few crops on the land.”
The family said the suspect was initially held by police but later released. They want an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said they have been taking statements about the incident and arrests are imminent.
