A 20-year-old man is dead after an alleged shoot-out with the police in Couva.
He has been identified as Josiah Vespre, also known as Zoomi or Zulu.
Initial report stated that around 1:50 pm officers of the Southern Division Task Force were on exercise duty along Railway Road, Couva when they stopped their vehicles and came out. The report stated that the officers saw two men running in the opposite direction, and Vespre began shooting at them. The officers reportedly returned fire and shot him.
A social media video shows the officers lifting him from a bushy area towards the road. Vespre was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A Glock pistol, containing a magazine and several rounds of ammunition, was recovered. Southern Division Snr Supt Richard Smith has confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the fatal shooting.
