A Chaguanas man identified by police as a suspected extortionist was killed during a “Controlled Payment Operation” conducted by officers of the Anti-Extortion Unit yesterday.
According to a TTPS media release, officers of the unit and the Home Invasion Team (HIT) were conducting investigations into a report that a Tunapuna businessman was made to pay $1,800 over a three-week period and was being told he needed to pay $3,000 monthly beginning from yesterday.
While awaiting the suspect’s arrival, the Tunapuna businessman was called and told to increase the amount to $3,500, which was done in preparation for the sting operation.
Police said around 4.15 pm, the suspect, Jaden Pierre, 26 of Hibiscus Drive, Edinburgh 500, arrived at the meeting point in a black Hyundai Tucson, which was parked along Basilon Street.
After collecting the money, which was in a white envelope, two Anti-Extortion Unit members approached him, and after identifying themselves, he reportedly pointed a gun at them.
Both officers then pulled out their guns, and both fired in his direction. Pierre was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
The envelope with the $3,500.00 was recovered.
The driver of the black Tucson fled, despite officers chasing it and crashing into several other vehicles, and an all-points bulletin placed on it, managed to evade capture.
A man and woman from Assaraph Road, Charlieville, were later arrested in relation to the incident.
