A 42-year-old El Dorado man was shot and killed by police on Saturday after allegedly attacking an officer during a domestic violence response.
Police said officers responded to a report around 1:30 p.m. at Lovers Lane, El Dorado. On arrival, they heard screams coming from inside the house, but calls for someone to open the door went unanswered.
Led by Cpl Persad, the officers breached a side door and entered. Inside, they found Mustapha Rawlins assaulting a female relative. Police said Rawlins then turned on Persad and stabbed him, prompting the other officers to open fire.
Both men were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where Rawlins was declared dead on arrival. Persad was treated and discharged around 6 p.m.
Rawlins is the sixth person to be killed by police since the State of Emergency was declared. Previous fatal shootings included two alleged kidnappers and a prison escapee.
