A man from Arima with a criminal record of 25 pending cases has been granted bail after appearing in court charged with robbing a woman at a supermarket car park in Chaguanas, last Friday.
Nickail Julien, 35, of Mahogany Drive, Malabar, Arima, was granted $75,000 bail when he appeared before High Court Master Rhea Libert, yesterday.
Police prosecutors objected to bail for Julien based on his lengthy criminal record, which includes pending cases for firearm possession, robbery and shooting offences.
They also called on Master Libert to consider that Julien was alleged to have committed the recent robbery while on bail.
In his submissions, Julien’s lawyer Bhimal Maharajh challenged the position.
Noting that his client had attended all hearings of his other cases, Maharajh noted that there was no evidence he would abscond if granted bail once again.
He also claimed that his client maintained his innocence in relation to the robbery as he suggested that Julien was hired by two men to drive them to and from the location.
He also noted that Julien was not pointed out by the victim during an identification parade.
As part of his bail conditions, Julien was ordered to stay away from the alleged victim and to report to his nearest police station once weekly until his case is determined.
The case was transferred to the Chaguanas District Court and will come up for hearing on December 16.
Julien was accused of robbing the woman along Ramsaran Street in Chaguanas, last Friday.
