Hours before pensioner Amina Mohammed was killed by armed men during a deadly home invasion on Saturday night in Couva, a Maraval man was killed in a similar manner.
Police identified the victim as Bertram Greenaway.
Police said around 8 am Saturday a relative went to the 68-year-old’s home at Herrera Trace, Le Platte, Maraval, to drop a meal for him and noticed the food she dropped on Friday was still on the front porch. When she opened the door she found Greenaway on the living room floor with blood around him.
The relative contacted the police. Officers said the retiree was stabbed in his throat.
They suspect robbery was the motive.
Poisoned coffee leaves hunter dead
A hunting trip among nine friends ended abruptly after 65-year-old hunter Vishnu Dipchan died after consuming what is believed to have been poisoned coffee.
The men had gone to hunt four miles in the Cushe forest, Rio Claro.
The relative told police around 7.30 pm, five of the hunters consumed coffee and soon began experiencing nausea and vomiting.
Investigators said his relatives had to go into the forest to help the hunters after they started to feel nauseous after consuming the drink. The men were rescued from inside the forest off Legendre Road in Ecclesville. All of the hunters were transported to the Rio Claro Health Centre, where Dipchan was found unresponsive and died shortly before midnight. Police say they are now considering the possibility of homicide or poisoning.
Hunters Basdeo Rambharose, Jaggernath Ramnath, Arjoon Persad, and Rajkumar Baksh—were transferred to Sangre Grande Hospital for further treatment while Rafi Baksh, Shaban Khan, Navish Rambharose, and Salim Khan were treated and discharged.
Police seized samples of water, coffee, and sugar from the camp. Homicide Region 3 officers are investigating.
