A 39-year-old man, described as a menace, has been fatally shot by the police after he allegedly attacked them with a cutlass in Mayaro yesterday morning. He was identified as Gabriel Hinkson, 39, of Food Crop Road, Double Bridge, Newlands Village.
Initial reports stated that around 3 am, officers from the Mayaro CID went 150 feet along Food Crop Road to get to Hinkson’s garden camp. The police were following up on a recent report against him of malicious damage to property valued at $13,000. The officers said they announced their presence, and the victim came to a galvanised door, armed with a cutlass. They said the man attacked them, injuring one officer on his hand. He was shot multiple times.
Hinkson was taken to the Mayaro District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His relatives admitted that he was “regarded as a menace” in the community, as there were many reports against him in the police station, and he had also served prison time.
