The Chaguanas Borough Corporation is appealing for more traffic wardens to deal with the back-to-school traffic today, Monday as the new academic year begins.
Speaking with Guardian Media, Chaguanas Mayor Faaiq Mohammed said the wardens are appointed by the Ministry of Works. He said traffic can take quite a toll on commuters, especially during peak hours.
Mayor Mohammed said numerous principals also call his office for assistance to deal with traffic jams in front of their schools. He said the wardens can greatly assist with the congestion. However, this can only be realised if the Minister of Works makes the relevant appointments and he is hoping to have a discussion with them soon for it to happen.
Meanwhile, on Friday the office of the Mayor partnered with Elegance Studios run by Gabriel Perez to give back-to-school haircuts to students. Mohammed said stationery and vouchers were also distributed. Perez, a Venezuelan national who moved to Trinidad and Tobago some five years ago, has his barber studio set up at Caroni Savannah Road. Perez said he was only too happy to give back to the community he now calls home.
