Mentally ill son held for dad’s murder

A 75-year-old pen­sion­er was found dead in his kitchen on Thurs­day night, and po­lice have since ar­rest­ed his men­tal­ly ill son in con­nec­tion with the in­ci­dent.

The body of Pe­ter Ban­field was dis­cov­ered around 8 pm at his home at LP #14 Mamoral Road, Flana­gin Town, by a rel­a­tive who had been alert­ed by Ban­field’s sis­ter.

The woman told po­lice she re­ceived a call from her moth­er, who said Ban­field’s son, Christo­pher, had shown up at her house be­hav­ing sus­pi­cious­ly.

Con­cerned af­ter re­peat­ed at­tempts to con­tact Ban­field failed, the woman went to his home. She told po­lice she called out to him sev­er­al times be­fore open­ing the door and dis­cov­er­ing his body ly­ing mo­tion­less in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor.

Bras­so po­lice were con­tact­ed and re­spond­ed im­me­di­ate­ly. Of­fi­cers found Ban­field on his back with vis­i­ble wounds to his head and face.

The scene was se­cured and crime scene in­ves­ti­ga­tors processed the area, col­lect­ing ev­i­dence and bag­ging the de­ceased’s hands.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors were told that around 7.30 pm, Ban­field went to his aunt’s house and said he and his fa­ther had an al­ter­ca­tion and that he left him in the kitchen. Po­lice lat­er ar­rest­ed him and took him to the Ch­agua­nas Health Fa­cil­i­ty for med­ical at­ten­tion.

He was treat­ed, dis­charged, and re­mains in po­lice cus­tody.
