The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (RDLG) is advising parts of the country currently experiencing serious flooding conditions that it will take a while for the flood waters to dissipate because of high tide at 1:30 pm, today.
The Ministry issued a brief a short while ago, which also states that the Disaster Management Units (DMUs) of all 14 Regional Corporations have been activated and are standing-by to distribute sandbags and other essentials to their burgesses needing such assistance.
The Ministry also assures that Municipal Police Officers currently are in the field, monitoring developments.
The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (RDLG) informs:
1. On Tuesday 4th October 2022, Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) placed Trinidad and Tobago under Adverse Weather Alert 2 - Yellow Status.
2. On its present course, the system is expected to move across the Windward Islands during today Wednesday 5th /Thursday 6th October 2022.
3. The TTMS has informed that at present Trinidad and Tobago is being affected by unstable weather conditions including periods of heavy rain fall with strong gusty winds in excess of 55km/hr.
4. All Municipal Police are in the field providing live on-site confirmation updates. Trinidad has experienced episodes of street and flash flooding and river and riverine breaches are being actively monitored. Please NOTE that runoff of water is impacted by High Tide at 1:30 pm today.
5. The Minister of Rural Development and Local Government (RDLG), the Hon. Faris Al-Rawi conferred with Government Agencies, as well as through RDLG’s Disaster Management Units (DMU) to all 14 Municipal Corporations. RDLG also coordinated with WASA, T&TEC, Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force, Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police Service, National Quarries Company Limited and SWMCOL.
6. A call to all agencies and response bodies was made to engage all preparatory and relief procedures for the current adverse weather conditions.
7. Reports of flash flooding in areas have been received and the relevant bodies have been deployed to address accordingly. The tide is currently raising as high tide is at 1:30 pm, this will result in delayed runoff of flash flooding. Motorists are asked to exercise extreme caution on roadways.
8. Members of the public are encouraged to reach out and communicate with the DMUs of all 14 Corporations to report flooding, request for relief and other issues that may lead to blockage of roadways and water courses and/or which may pose a risk to life and property. Members of the public are also reminded to approach their respective corporations for distribution of sandbags if necessary.
