Three men were arrested and a mini-Uzi submachine gun seized by officers of the Northern Division Task Force, Central, following a high-speed chase and police-involved shooting incident in the Arouca district.
The incident occurred on Tuesday.
Police say officers were on mobile patrol around 1:30 pm on Tuesday 12th February, 2019, when they received information of men armed with guns in the Arouca district.
The officers proceeded to the location and observed a blue Nissan Almera motor vehicle with four male occupants, proceeding along Golden Grove Road, Arouca.
When the officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, it sped off and a chase ensued which ended at the corner of the Eastern Main Road and Waterloo Road.
As the Almera came to a stop, a man exited the vehicle and pointed a firearm at the officers and fired several shots at them.
The officers subsequently returned fire in the direction of the gunman who ran off and escaped.
The other three men in the vehicle; a 24-year-old and a 21-year-old both of Arima and a 21-year-old of Piarco were arrested and a search of the vehicle conducted.
The search resulted in the mini-Uzi firearm loaded with a magazine containing 45 rounds of 9mm ammunition, being discovered hidden between the front passenger seat and the front center console of the vehicle.
