A 20-year-old Vistabella waitress is fighting for her life at the San Fernando General Hospital after being stabbed in the abdomen shortly after returning home with her nine-month-old son on New Year’s Day.

Mikayla Augustus, of Fabien Street, Vistabella, sustained a lung injury and underwent emergency surgery at the hospital where she remains in serious condition.

Police said the attack occurred around 1.10 am when Augustus returned to her mother Melissa Boodasingh’s home with her baby.

A 21-year-old man known to Augustus confronted her and stabbed her in the abdomen with a switch-blade.

A male relative restrained the suspect and called the police.

Officers from the Mon Repos Police Station, led by PC Ramrattansingh, arrived at Boodasingh’s home and arrested the suspect before seizing the weapon.

He is expected to face an attempted murder charge, following instructions from the Director of Public Prosecution.
