Hours after celebrating her sister’s birthday, Chiffon Daniel’s family’s smiles turned into tears after a fatal road accident ended her life.

The accident also landed her close friend and that woman’s ten-year-old son in hospital.

Daniel, 35, was a mother of four who lived at Bagatelle Road, Diego Martin.

Police said she died around 2.10 am yesterday, after the car she was in was struck by an oncoming vehicle Sierra Leone Road, Diego Martin.

Daniel’s close friend, who lived streets away at Raphael Terrace, Bagatelle, Diego Martin, with her two children, had just collected her special needs son from relatives and was on the way back when tragedy struck.

Police said the woman’s car had been proceeding through the intersection when a White Nissan Frontier driven by a man from Diego Martin is believed to have broken the traffic signal and collided with their white Nissan B15.

Daniel died at the scene, while her friend and her son, along with the other driver, were all taken to the St James Infirmary where they were treated.

The three were later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where they were said to be in a stable condition up to yesterday.

Police said the child received a laceration to the head, while his mother sustained severe injuries.

When Guardian Media visited Daniel’s home yesterday, tears flowed freely as her children, relatives, neighbours and friends mourned her death.

Dazed and shocked, a male relative wiped tears as he said, “Most I can say is she is a hard-working person.”

The mother of four girls, aged 18, 15 and twin girls aged four, was described as the main breadwinner for her family.

At a loss for words, a relative lamented, “What I go say boy? Right now it hard ... know what I mean?”

Fighting not to break down as other relatives hugged and comforted one another, the relative recalled how the celebrations turned sour.

He said Daniel and her friend had just dropped off the birthday girl at their home, when the friend indicated she was going to pick up her son who was staying with relatives nearby.

Daniel, he said, opted to accompany the friend for what was supposed to be a quick trip.

Relatives said they were notified by the authorities after the accident occurred.

“The family in a state of shock. Everybody head hot.”

Daniel’s family said her death was a double blow, as they suffered another death earlier in the year.
