A 28-year-old motorcyclist became this country’s latest road fatality when he crashed his bike during an accident in Curepe on Wednesday night.

Richard Nangwah was riding his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle along Southern Main Road at 10.15 pm when he collided with a silver Kia Cerato. The impact threw Nangwah from the motorcycle onto a pavement, while the car crashed into a nearby light pole and caught fire. The 26-year-old driver escaped.

Officers from the North Central Division and firefighters from the San Juan Fire Station went to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

A district medical officer declared Nangwah dead at the scene.

Addressing whether issues with the roadway led to the accident, Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation chairman Josiah Austin said he would have to verify whether that section of the road fell under the purview of his corporation or the Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT). Austin added that he knew the MOWT was carrying out patching on all major roads.

Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan said he preferred not to comment as he did not have the report and was also mindful of the ongoing police investigation into the accident.

Minister of Local Government Faris Al-Rawi said he wanted to get all the details on the matter before commenting.
