A 28-year-old mo­tor­cy­clist be­came this coun­try's lat­est road fa­tal­i­ty af­ter crash­ing his bike while try­ing to avoid a pot­hole in Curepe on Wednes­day night.

Po­lice said Richard Nang­wah was rid­ing his Kawasa­ki Nin­ja mo­tor­cy­cle on the north­bound lane of the South­ern Main Road, Curepe, at 10.15 pm when he swerved to avoid a pot­hole and crashed in­to a sil­ver Kia Cer­a­to.

The im­pact threw Nang­wah from the mo­tor­cy­cle on­to a pave­ment, while the car crashed in­to a near­by light pole and caught fire. The 26-year-old dri­ver es­caped.

Of­fi­cers of the North Cen­tral Di­vi­sion and fire­fight­ers from the San Juan Fire Sta­tion went to the scene and ex­tin­guished the blaze.

A dis­trict med­ical of­fi­cer al­so ar­rived and de­clared Nang­wah dead at the scene.

Po­lice towed both the mo­tor­cy­cle and the Cer­a­to to the St Joseph Po­lice Sta­tion.
