SHARLENE RAMPERSAD

Police say no charges will be brought against the relatives of a one-year-old girl who was found wandering alone at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain on Sunday night.

According to reports, the child was spotted wandering in a dark area of the Savannah by a family on an outing around 7 pm on Sunday.

Police were alerted and according to the T&T Police Service’s (TTPS’) public information officer, ASP Sheridon Hill, the child was returned to her relatives less than 20 minutes later.

Hill said he was told the child’s mother said the child was playing between two groups of her extended family when she wandered off.

Hill said the officers determined the child had not been abandoned and made a decision not to pursue charges against the parents.

Shortly after the child was found, one Twitter user made a post about the situation.

The tweet soon went viral, with other users screenshotting it and sharing it on other social media sites.

Scores of other users condemned the family, saying the child was in danger.

On one post on Instagram, a woman who identified herself as the child’s aunt said the little girl was doing well.

She denied the child had been abandoned, saying, “Everyone was out kite flying, in less than a minute she wandered off, thank God it was a Good Samaritan who found her, we are a God-fearing family. She is home and doing fine.”
