Grieving relatives of 74-year-old Savitri Bhola and her son Christopher who were burnt to death in a fire that destroyed their Fyzabad home still have no clue how the fire started.
While preparations for their funerals are being done, Bhola’s grandson, Barry Rajhoonanan, said the funerals are likely to take place in about two weeks because they are awaiting the arrival of Bhola’s sister and two grandchildren from New York.
He said they recently took the COVID vaccine and now have to wait two more weeks before they are considered fully vaccinated to enter T&T.
Fondly called Ma, the mother of five, grandmother of 15 and great-grandmother of three, and her son were asleep at their Easy Street, Fyzabad home when the fire broke out around 2 am on Saturday.
Bhola’s son lived with her while her stepbrothers Krishna, 54, and Khamal Bhola, 52, lived in a separate section of the house.
Krishna, 54, told reporters that he got up to urinate and saw “a bright light” and when he went outside he saw “the while back” of the house on fire.
He ran back into the house and pulled out his brother who was asleep. He said they called out to his sister, but got no response.
In the midst of the crackling sounds as the fire engulfed the house, he heard a scream.
The bodies of the elderly woman and her son were burnt beyond recognition. Raghoonanan said an autopsy was inconclusive.
He said his uncle Christopher had two children and was unemployed.
He said the house was rewired about three months ago in the section where his grandmother lived.
The family has not yet received a report from the Fire Service. Investigations are continuing
