Police officers attached to the Northern Division destroyed 65 cannabis trees, seized cannabis and arrested one man during anti-crime exercises conducted in Maloney and St Joseph on Sunday.
According to a statement, officers attached to the Maloney Police Station carried out an intelligence-led exercise between 4 pm and 7 pm in the Maloney district.
Police said officers acted on information and went to a forested area behind Britten Boulevard, Maloney, where they discovered and destroyed 65 cannabis trees.
The exercise was coordinated by Supt Mc Kenzie, ASP Balewa, ASP Morales and Insp Smith and supervised by W/Sgt Ramai and Cpl Griffith.
PC Lawrence, PC Phillip and other officers attached to the Maloney Police Station also participated in the operation.
In a separate exercise, officers attached to the St Joseph Police Station conducted an anti-crime operation between 11.30 am and 1.30 pm in the St Joseph district.
Police said officers acted on information received and went to Rapsy Street, Curepe, where checks were conducted in the area.
During the exercise, officers discovered a rectangular block of cannabis wrapped in clear plastic and concealed inside a drain.
Police said the cannabis weighed 820 grammes. Investigations are continuing.
Officers also responded to reports concerning a Spanish-speaking male suspect who was allegedly bursting residents’ garbage bags in the Curepe district.
According to the release, officers observed a man fitting the description along the Priority Bus Route near the Curepe Bridge.
The suspect was arrested and taken into custody pending enquiries.
Police said the exercises formed part of ongoing anti-crime operations in the Northern Division aimed at targeting illegal activities and responding to reports from members of the public.
