One man was arrested and two firearms, several rounds of ammunition, and quantities of narcotics were seized during anti-crime exercises conducted by officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) on Saturday.
The exercises, which ran between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on April 26, focused on high-crime areas across the North Eastern and Port of Spain Divisions.
According to the TTPS, around 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a playground on Upper Erica Street, Rock City, Laventille, where they approached the area tactically. Police Constable Sayers reported seeing a man in disheveled clothing who, upon spotting the officers, fled north. Although the suspect escaped capture, PC Sayers later conducted a search of the area and discovered a CPX-1 firearm with a magazine containing four rounds of 9mm ammunition. The weapon and ammunition were seized and taken to the Besson Street Police Station.
Later during the exercise, officers patrolling Chanka Trace, El Socorro, stopped and searched a man, finding 178 grammes of cannabis in his possession.
The 39-year-old suspect, a resident of Chanka Trace, was arrested and taken to the Barataria Police Station.
In a separate operation, officers discovered three packets of cannabis weighing approximately 330 grammes during a search of an abandoned lot along Troumacaque Road.
The operations in Trinidad were spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hazel, Senior Superintendent Spence, Superintendent Ramsook, and Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Singh, and coordinated by Acting Inspector Khan.
Meanwhile, in Tobago, at approximately 10:30 a.m., officers on patrol along Beverly Hills, Bethel, spotted three men standing by the roadside. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the men fled into a nearby forested area. Despite giving chase, officers were unable to apprehend the suspects. However, PC Sealey conducted a search of the area and found a metal and wood firearm loaded with five rounds of .38mm ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were taken to the Shirvan Road Police Station.
The Tobago operation was led by ACP Hazel, ACP Subero, Senior Superintendents Montrichard, Elie, and Spece, and supervised by Sergeant Ramsamooj.
Police investigations into these discoveries are ongoing.
