An ac­ci­dent in St Joseph ear­ly on Sun­day morn­ing end­ed with the death of an uniden­ti­fied man and an­oth­er in crit­i­cal con­di­tion at hos­pi­tal, po­lice said.

Sources con­firmed that a gold Nis­san Almera was speed­ing on the west­bound lane of the East­ern Main Road at around 2 am when it drove over a pot hole near a tyre shop, caus­ing dri­ver to lose con­trol, as it swerved off the road and crashed in­to a riv­er off the St Joseph Bridge.

Of­fi­cers of the St Joseph Po­lice Sta­tion were called in and found the body of an uniden­ti­fied man in bush­es about 20 feet down an em­bank­ment from the road.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said the uniden­ti­fied man ap­peared to be of African de­scent and was wear­ing a mul­ti-coloured t-shirt and a grey three quar­ter pants.

Po­lice said it was un­clear if the man was one of the oc­cu­pants of the car, who was thrown from the ve­hi­cle on im­pact, or if it was a pedes­tri­an who was killed dur­ing the ac­ci­dent.

By­standers re­port­ed see­ing sev­er­al peo­ple flee the crashed car leav­ing be­hind a Mal­oney man who was tak­en to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex.

Of­fi­cers of the St Joseph CID are con­tin­u­ing en­quiries.
