An accident in St Joseph early on Sunday morning ended with the death of an unidentified man and another in critical condition at hospital, police said.
Sources confirmed that a gold Nissan Almera was speeding on the westbound lane of the Eastern Main Road at around 2 am when it drove over a pot hole near a tyre shop, causing driver to lose control, as it swerved off the road and crashed into a river off the St Joseph Bridge.
Officers of the St Joseph Police Station were called in and found the body of an unidentified man in bushes about 20 feet down an embankment from the road.
Investigators said the unidentified man appeared to be of African descent and was wearing a multi-coloured t-shirt and a grey three quarter pants.
Police said it was unclear if the man was one of the occupants of the car, who was thrown from the vehicle on impact, or if it was a pedestrian who was killed during the accident.
Bystanders reported seeing several people flee the crashed car leaving behind a Maloney man who was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
Officers of the St Joseph CID are continuing enquiries.
