Police are trying to establish the details of a shooting in Champs Fleurs that led to the death of a Belmont man and the wounding of a woman early on Saturday morning.
Police said the woman was driving her grey Toyota Rav4 on Daniel Drive, off Mendez Drive, at around midnight when a white Nissan Wagon drove onto the road, blocking her path.
Two gunmen got out of the car and reportedly shot at her vehicle, before shooting at another car behind her.
However, the driver of this vehicle a prison officer, pulled out his licensed pistol and shot at the gunmen, killing one instantly, as the other ran away.
Police said the dead suspect was identified as a man from Belmont and a Taurus pistol with 11 rounds of ammunition found nearby.
The wounded woman was taken to hospital and is said to be in serious but stable condition, having been shot in her face.
Police said 19 spent 9 mm shells were found at the scene.
Investigators suspect the motive for the shooting may have been an attempted robbery.
