A 21-year-old Matelot man is in police custody after a joint team of police, soldiers and Coast Guard officers raided a forest encampment and marijuana field on Friday afternoon.
Police said officers of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the Regiment’s Special Forces and the Coast Guard’s Special Naval Unit (SNU) advanced about three miles into Matelot, east of Santa Cruz Road, where they found a “sizable plantation” of marijuana plants.
The officers saw two men in the field, and one of them pointed a gun at them.
Police said they were prepared to shoot, but the suspects ran off.
Officers caught one of the men hiding behind a tree, while the other escaped.
The arrested suspect had $5,195.
At the camp, officers counted 1,300 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $800,000.
At a nearby camp, police also found 32 rounds of .380 ammunition, 19 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, five 12-gauge cartridges, two guns and firearm components.
They also seized a crocus bag containing dried marijuana valued at $45,760.
Enquiries are continuing by officers of the SIU.
