Despite his inexperience in the political arena, People's National Movement candidate for Caroni Central Adam Hosein is confident that he can wrestle away the seat from the United National Congress.
Accompanied by former labour minister Jennifer Baptiste-Primus and other supporters he submitted his nomination papers at the office of the Returning Officer at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva yesterday.
Speaking after with Guardian Media, he said, "It was a very nerve-wracking experience. I was very anxious, but everything went well. It went smoothly."
Hosein said the constituents are ready for change.
"We have already started campaigning since October. We will continue doing our campaigning. We will continue reaching out to the citizens, the constituents of Caroni Central and we will let them know that we are here to serve them. The PNM party is here to serve them, and we believe that PNM representation in Caroni Central will only do better for the constituency."
Meanwhile, United National Congress candidate David Lee said he was eager to continue the work of his colleague, former MP Arnold Ram.
Lee, who is the former MP for Pointe-a-Pierre (now referred to as Claxton Bay) said Caroni Central is a "comfortable" seat for the party and he was confident it will remain in the UNC fold. As for his relationship with Ram, he said, "We were friends before politics, and we will be friends after politics."
Ram, who was among Lee's supporters at the stadium, said he was happy that the party chose Lee as his replacement.
"I feel a sense of pride for him personally, and also that the United National Congress is on its way to victory on April 28."
With both Returning Officer offices for Caroni Central and Couva South located at the stadium, there was a heavy presence of both PNM and UNC supporters.
While there was the usual political picong, the supporters, at one point, were seen dancing and laughing with one another.
