Both the People’s National Movement and the Opposition United National Congress yesterday expressed satisfaction with a Guardian Media-commissioned poll, the result of which was published on Sunday.
Two polls were conducted on behalf of GML by HHB and Associates Ltd and the result of the first one was published Sunday, showing the PNM was slightly ahead of the UNC in the race for the August 10 General Election.
The first part of the poll shows that 35 per cent of respondents support the PNM and 29 per cent support the UNC, while only two per cent said they would vote for other parties.
“However, with two weeks to go before voters cast their ballots, 16 per cent of the respondents said they are still undecided and 11 per cent indicated they would not vote.
HHB and Associates managing director Louis Bertrand said bassed on the poll results, new political parties had not influenced the voting population.
Contacted for comment on the result of the poll on Sunday, PNM deputy leader and Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinan said he was pleased with the poll result.
“The poll shows that the PNM will win, and that’s how the party feels,” Sinanan said in a short response.
UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar was also happy at her party’s performance.
“(The poll) says the PNM is barely ahead. Let me tell you that this poll was done two weeks ago but if it was done now it would show a different result,” Persad-Bissessar said at a San Fernando West women’s luncheon at Achievors Banquet Hall, San Fernando.
“I have been to San Fernando West, La Horquetta, St Joseph, Moruga/Tableland, Toco and Tunapuna, the marginal and if that poll was done today the UNC would have been in front.
“The margin of error is plus four, minus four. They didn’t poll Tobago. The poll is good for us, trending in the right directions and come election day the votes will be cast for the UNC to win that election.”
