Police are investigating whether an attempt to steal copper may have led to the death of a man whose body was discovered at the former Petrotrin Pointe-à-Pierre compound on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Kevin Taylor, also known by the aliases Keron, Alkaline and Green Eye.
According to reports, a worker discovered Taylor lying face-up inside a generator enclosure near the tennis court on the eastern side of the compound around 12.30 pm. He was not immediately identified, as no form of identification was found on his person.
Police said Taylor did not have permission to be on the compound at the time. While an autopsy is still to be conducted, investigators suspect he may have been electrocuted.
The circumstances surrounding the incident bear similarities to previous cases at the same facility. Five years ago, 14-year-old Michael Sooknanan was found hanging from an electricity pole on the compound. He was also believed to have been attempting to steal copper at the time.
In another incident in 2016, Kerry Lewis, 38, died after he was electrocuted while attempting to connect an illegal electricity supply from a pumping jack—linked to the national electricity grid—to his home.
Up to late Tuesday, the company had not issued a statement on the latest incident and had not responded to calls or messages seeking comment.
