Tobago police seized an AR-15 rifle, ammunition, drugs, and suspected stolen items during a raid in Les Coteaux yesterday, as they intensified efforts to crack down on rising gun violence on the island.
Reports said officers from the Tobago Divisional Task Force, supported by the Inter-Agency Task Force, Guard and Emergency Branch, K9 Unit and Defence Force, carried out searches across the Moriah district between 4 and 8 am.
They found the high-powered rifle with 20 rounds of 5.56 ammunition and a magazine outside a dilapidated structure at Mt Zion Trace. Inside, police discovered a duffle bag with 11 packets of marijuana and several household items believed to be stolen, including a 65” Samsung television.
During a separate search at Wiggles Worth Drive, officers recovered a Glock magazine loaded with two rounds of 9mm ammunition. Police made no arrests.
Investigations are continuing.
Gun violence on the island has worsened in recent years. Tobago recorded 26 murders in 2024—with over 80 percent involving firearms.
Police have also recovered over 75 illegal firearms in Tobago in the last decade, with assault rifles appearing more frequently in recent operations.
