Days after the State of Emergency (SoE) was declared due to a crime syndicate involving prisoners, the T&T Prison Service announced that a prisoner escaped yesterday.
A media release yesterday reported that Abraham Briggs who is kept at Golden Grove Prison, escaped while working at the Youth Training Rehabilitation Centre (YTRC). Briggs was called a “star convict”, meaning he is serving his first sentence.
The release said an alarm was raised, and officers attached to the Emergency Response Unit responded along with officers of the Arouca Police Station.
Briggs, the release stated, is brown-skinned with a muscular build. He has a tattoo “KAB” on his lower right arm and a “Peace” symbol on his left hand, along with a scar on his left foot.
The release said he was serving a six-year sentence for robbery with aggravation and was expected to be released from prison in March 2029.
His last known address was Brooklyn Bridge Road Settlement, Sangre Grande.
“The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service is working diligently in conjunction with members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to apprehend Abraham Briggs in the shortest time possible,” the release said.
Anyone who may have any information is asked to contact the nearest police station, call 999, or contact the Prison Service at 623 7070 or 800 PRSN (7776). He is considered to be armed and dangerous.
At a media conference last Friday, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro said a criminal syndicate was behind the State of Emergency, citing a “specific threat” targeting high-level state officials.
“Yesterday afternoon I would have received intelligence reports whereby organised criminal gangs with persons inside of the prisons and persons operating on the outside of the prisons have formed themselves into what I would want to term an organised crime syndicate, and that they were planning actively so to carry out assassinations, robberies and kidnappings.”
So real is the threat that a number of inmates were removed from the prison and placed at Staubles Bay, which is the main base of the T&T Coast Guard, and Teteron Barracks, the main base of the T&T Regiment.
