Days af­ter the State of Emer­gency (SoE) was de­clared due to a crime syn­di­cate in­volv­ing pris­on­ers, the T&T Prison Ser­vice an­nounced that a pris­on­er es­caped yes­ter­day.

A me­dia re­lease yes­ter­day re­port­ed that Abra­ham Brig­gs who is kept at Gold­en Grove Prison, es­caped while work­ing at the Youth Train­ing Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion Cen­tre (YTRC). Brig­gs was called a “star con­vict”, mean­ing he is serv­ing his first sen­tence.

The re­lease said an alarm was raised, and of­fi­cers at­tached to the Emer­gency Re­sponse Unit re­spond­ed along with of­fi­cers of the Arou­ca Po­lice Sta­tion.

Brig­gs, the re­lease stat­ed, is brown-skinned with a mus­cu­lar build. He has a tat­too “KAB” on his low­er right arm and a “Peace” sym­bol on his left hand, along with a scar on his left foot.

The re­lease said he was serv­ing a six-year sen­tence for rob­bery with ag­gra­va­tion and was ex­pect­ed to be re­leased from prison in March 2029.

His last known ad­dress was Brook­lyn Bridge Road Set­tle­ment, San­gre Grande.

“The Trinidad and To­ba­go Prison Ser­vice is work­ing dili­gent­ly in con­junc­tion with mem­bers of the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice to ap­pre­hend Abra­ham Brig­gs in the short­est time pos­si­ble,” the re­lease said.

Any­one who may have any in­for­ma­tion is asked to con­tact the near­est po­lice sta­tion, call 999, or con­tact the Prison Ser­vice at 623 7070 or 800 PRSN (7776). He is con­sid­ered to be armed and dan­ger­ous.

At a me­dia con­fer­ence last Fri­day, Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Al­lis­ter Gue­var­ro said a crim­i­nal syn­di­cate was be­hind the State of Emer­gency, cit­ing a “spe­cif­ic threat” tar­get­ing high-lev­el state of­fi­cials.

“Yes­ter­day af­ter­noon I would have re­ceived in­tel­li­gence re­ports where­by or­gan­ised crim­i­nal gangs with per­sons in­side of the pris­ons and per­sons op­er­at­ing on the out­side of the pris­ons have formed them­selves in­to what I would want to term an or­gan­ised crime syn­di­cate, and that they were plan­ning ac­tive­ly so to car­ry out as­sas­si­na­tions, rob­beries and kid­nap­pings.”

So re­al is the threat that a num­ber of in­mates were re­moved from the prison and placed at Staubles Bay, which is the main base of the T&T Coast Guard, and Teteron Bar­racks, the main base of the T&T Reg­i­ment.
