The acting Commissioner of Prisons is allaying fears that prison officers are under attack, after two incidents involving officers over the weekend.

Four days after an attempt on the life of Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Sherwin Bruce and the shooting and wounding of prison officer Steve Phipps, two other prison officers reported that they were attacked on Saturday.

However, acting Commissioner of Prisons Deopersad Ramoutar labelled the two incidents as “misinformation”. He said the incidents were not direct attacks against the prison or any officer.

“The vehicle fire was an electrical fire and the other, the shooting it is being investigated but doesn’t seem to be a direct attack,” Ramoutar explained.

In the most recent incident on Saturday at 9.10 pm, the officer identified as Quincy Wilson, 32 of Prizgar Lands Road, Laventille was in his yard walking towards his parked silver Nissan Tiida when he heard several gunshots.

The officer ran and took cover.

When the gunshots ceased and he emerged from hiding the officer went to his car where he saw two bullet holes in the windshield.

Police said Wilson did not sustain any injuries but said he felt pain in the right side of the hip and was later taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for treatment by a party of officers.

The scene was processed and eight 9 mm spent shells were found in the front of the victim’s vehicle.

On Saturday morning, a vehicle belonging to a prison officer assigned to the Maximum Security Prison was reportedly set on fire while parked at his home.

Investigations are continuing.
