A quarry supervisor, on his way home from work, was killed on Tuesday evening as he left the Stollmeyer Quarry in Santa Cruz.
The rapid gunfire sent nearby residents diving for cover.
Police said Saastri Gopaul was shot several times around 2.30 pm at Cangrejal Road.
He was employed with Seereeram Brothers Ltd.
The victim was driving a company van when it was blocked by a car parked a short distance away from the company’s guard booth.
Police said two gunmen got out from the waiting Nissan Tiida and began shooting at Gopaul, causing the truck to run off the road.
When Guardian Media visited the scene around 4.30 pm, the victim’s family and co-workers were there. Tears flowed as undertakers removed his body minutes later.
One resident described the crime situation as bad and out of control, saying the area was no stranger to such occurrences.
He said, “It had one last year…is like we getting one per year now.”
Saying that Cangrejal meant crab, the elderly man added,
“The young people in their 19s, 20s…they evil and they need to go back to God.”
Gopaul’s co-workers declined to comment when approached.
