Al­bert Ramdin, the 67-year-old For­eign Af­fairs Min­is­ter of Suri­name has been elect­ed as the new Sec­re­tary Gen­er­al of the Or­ga­ni­za­tion of Amer­i­can States (OAS).

Ramdin, elec­tion by ac­cla­ma­tion, fol­lowed the with­draw­al of Rubén Ramírez, the For­eign Min­is­ter of Paraguay. He suc­ceeds Luis Al­ma­gro, who was first elect­ed as OAS Sec­re­tary Gen­er­al in 2015 and re-elect­ed in 2020.

Ramdin, who be­comes the first Caribbean Com­mu­ni­ty (CARI­COM) na­tion­al to be elect­ed to the po­si­tion, will serve un­til 2030.
