Regional govts to look at sociodemographic impacts of COVID-19 pandemic next week

(ECLAC) — Se­nior rep­re­sen­ta­tives of gov­ern­ment, in­ter­na­tion­al in­sti­tu­tions, the pri­vate sec­tor, acad­e­mia and civ­il so­ci­ety will gath­er to analyse the so­ciode­mo­graph­ic im­pacts of the COVID-19 pan­dem­ic in the re­gion and the chal­lenges posed by the health and so­cial cri­sis for im­ple­ment­ing the Mon­te­v­ideo Con­sen­sus, dur­ing the Fourth Ses­sion of the Re­gion­al Con­fer­ence on Pop­u­la­tion and De­vel­op­ment. 

The Con­fer­ence will take place from Tues­day, June 28 through Thurs­day, June 30, 2022, at the cen­tral head­quar­ters of the Eco­nom­ic Com­mis­sion for Latin Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in San­ti­a­go, Chile.

The meet­ing will be in­au­gu­rat­ed on Tues­day, June 28 at 2:30 pm lo­cal time in Chile (GMT -4) by Di­ana Miloslavich, Min­is­ter of Women and Vul­ner­a­ble Pop­u­la­tions of Pe­ru, in Pe­ru’s ca­pac­i­ty as Chair of the Pre­sid­ing Of­fi­cers of the Re­gion­al Con­fer­ence on Pop­u­la­tion and De­vel­op­ment; Harold Robin­son, Re­gion­al Di­rec­tor for Latin Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean of the Unit­ed Na­tions Pop­u­la­tion Fund (UNF­PA); and Raúl Gar­cía-Bucha­ca, ECLAC’s Deputy Ex­ec­u­tive Sec­re­tary for Man­age­ment and Pro­gramme Analy­sis.

At this event—which will take place us­ing a hy­brid for­mat (in-per­son and vir­tu­al)—ECLAC will present a doc­u­ment that analy­ses the pan­dem­ic’s so­ciode­mo­graph­ic im­pacts in the re­gion and in­cludes pol­i­cy rec­om­men­da­tions for a trans­for­ma­tive re­cov­ery with equal­i­ty. It al­so will un­veil the vir­tu­al plat­form for re­gion­al fol­low-up of im­ple­men­ta­tion of the Mon­te­v­ideo Con­sen­sus.

In ad­di­tion, rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the tech­ni­cal sec­re­tari­ats of the sub­sidiary bod­ies of ECLAC and of the Fo­rum of the Coun­tries of Latin Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean on Sus­tain­able De­vel­op­ment will re­port on their con­tri­bu­tions to and syn­er­gies in­volv­ing im­ple­men­ta­tion of the Mon­te­v­ideo Con­sen­sus and re­gion­al fol­low-up of the 2030 Agen­da, among oth­er is­sues.

The meet­ing al­so will fea­ture two the­mat­ic pan­els on which pre­sen­ters from gov­ern­ments, civ­il so­ci­ety and acad­e­mia will analyse the pan­dem­ic’s ef­fects on both the re­gion’s pop­u­la­tion dy­nam­ics as well as on im­ple­men­ta­tion of the Mon­te­v­ideo Con­sen­sus and the 2030 Agen­da.

In ad­di­tion, a se­ries of side events will be held, both in per­son and vir­tu­al­ly, dur­ing the Con­fer­ence.

Cur­rent­ly, the Con­fer­ence is chaired by the Gov­ern­ment of Pe­ru and re­ceives strate­gic sup­port from UNF­PA.

The Mon­te­v­ideo Con­sen­sus on Pop­u­la­tion and De­vel­op­ment, agreed up­on by re­gion­al gov­ern­ments in Au­gust 2013, seeks to pri­ori­tise pop­u­la­tion dy­nam­ics in sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment, is­sues of youth and ag­ing, and ac­cess to sex­u­al and re­pro­duc­tive health ser­vices.
