The Sen­ate ap­proved the Cannabis Con­trol Bill (2020) just af­ter 1 am yes­ter­day, af­ter a marathon sit­ting which be­gan on Tues­day af­ter­noon.

This was con­firmed by Gov­ern­ment and Op­po­si­tion of­fi­cials.

The Bill seeks to reg­u­late the han­dling of cannabis ac­tiv­i­ties and to al­low for the es­tab­lish­ment of a T&T Cannabis Li­cens­ing Au­thor­i­ty to is­sue li­cences - from cul­ti­va­tion and dis­tri­b­u­tion to trans­port - of a cannabis busi­ness sec­tor.

It was, how­ev­er, passed with amend­ments.

The amend­ments will now be sent to the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives for ap­proval.

The fo­cus on com­plet­ing the bill was al­so due to to­mor­row’s sit­ting of the Sen­ate, which will de­bate the Ap­pro­pri­a­tion Bill to add $3 bil­lion to the 2022 Bud­get.

That bill was pre­sent­ed in the House on Mon­day.
