A 26-year-old man accused of killing his former girlfriend, Kiefer Wilson, remained in police custody last evening, even as relatives defended the victim’s reputation.
Relatives said Wilson had ended the relationship with the suspect some time ago.
Police said on Tuesday evening, Wilson was with a friend who had come from Jamaica to celebrate her birthday last Saturday.
Investigators said the suspect spotted them together and followed them in his car, resulting in a chase along the Solomon Hochoy Highway.
As they approached the Gandhi Village Roundabout, police said the suspect suddenly swerved in front of their vehicle, resulting in their car hitting the rear of the one the suspect was driving.
Wilson, her friend and the suspect all came out of their vehicles, and the suspect reportedly attacked them with a wheel spanner. Wilson was struck on her head.
She and her friend tried running away but were chased by the suspect in his car, which he then used to slam into Wilson. She died on the median.
Relatives insisted yesterday that Wilson, 27, and her friend from Jamaica were not in a relationship.
In a telephone interview, Wilson’s sister, Shazara Sankar, said the family wanted to be left in peace to grieve. She said her sister went through “a lot” before she died and now her name was being tarnished.
Sankar added that Wilson’s reputation was also being dragged through the mud, and “she is not here to defend herself.”
She said Wilson’s friend had contacted them and gave details of what transpired that night. However, she declined to reveal what he said. Sankar said she was also very traumatised by her sister’s ordeal and how she died.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are investigating.
